Feel Good

Feel Good

Hanna Bar-or, an UCR undergraduate , founded a new non-profit organization on campus called FeelGood. Bar-or first heard of Feel Good when she met the founder at the Clinton Global Initiative University where she had attended in February 2009. It is dedicated to “ending world hunger one grilled cheese at a time”. Bar-or mentioned, “[w]e believe hunger can be ended in our lifetime and we want to communicate to our fellow students that it is our responsibility to make sure it happens by getting involved. FeelGood is not just a university organization. It is a movement. It is a vehicle to create change in a big way; one person, one action at a time. FeelGood exists to raise money for organizations with proven models for sustainably ending hunger. It seeks to spread philosophies of gender and socioeconomic equality, sustainability, and justice which are key to unleashing the human spirit and ending world hunger”. Look out for this new organization by supporting their cause or joining the organization. In a couple of weeks, FeelGood will be hosting a non-profit deli on campus where grilled cheese sandwiches will be given away for free and asking for a small donation in return. The proceeds will be given to the Hunger Project, a strategic organization and global movement committed to the sustainable end of world hunger.

Students to start "UNICEF at UCR"

UCR undergraduates, Kaylee Falcon and Roxanne Iris Ocampo, will be initiating UCR's first student organization dedicated to raising awareness and support of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and their global programs to promote child well-being. The organization, UNICEF @ UCR, will support these programs through fundraising, education, and advocacy.

The first activity UNICEF @ UCR will implement is "The Tap Project." This program was started in 2007 by UNICEF and requests participating restaurants to encourage their patrons to donate a dollar or more for the tap water they usually order for free.  And, with every dollar donated, UNICEF is able to provide clean drinking water for 40 days.

Falcon, a freshman at UCR this year, began with inspiration. "I was inspired to start an organization for a humanitarian cause in high school when I saw Dr. Catherine Hamlin on the Oprah show.  Dr. Hamlin is an Australian obstetrician and gynecologist who has dedicated her life to providing free care for women with severe childbirth injuries in Ethiopia.  I could not fathom the impoverished lives these young women were leading and I felt a call to action.  Although I wasn't able to start an organization in high school, my dream is finally being realized with UNICEF @ UCR." Falcon was a student in Dr. Anne Sutherland's GBST 001 class in Fall of 2008.

Falcon is currently in her first year at UCR as a Theatre major.  She plans during college are to study abroad and participate in the UCDC program.  After I obtain my Bachelor's degree, I want to dedicate my service to the Peace Corps for a couple of years."

To get involved, students can contact Kaylee at kfalc001@student.ucr.edu. The first meeting of UNICEF @ UCR will be Thursday, February 12th.
